threadways like roadways

Last week in Machadodorp, Emakhazeni, we joined with four FATC Interns to create a journey that speaks to what is freedom, does it still have a meaning, the frustration of a much younger generation, the barriers, the land issue, the race issue, the prejudice...over 3 days we unravelled and re-knitted and weaved a new story that can be held, picked up re-connected and shared with everyone. Using the land to change the colour of white cloths, embroidering on fences, weaving a gate is a way to open up discussions as to how refugees, migrants, people feel coming to South Africa, the disappointment, the confusion dealing with resentment and anger towards you as a person, mother or child. Why do we need to keep othering people, you are too black, you are too light you are tall, you are short, you speak another language,  in the end it is clear you are a woman, that is the one single most critical othering happening right now...the fear and panic that women have to deal with everyday, the feeling of not being safe ever is by far the most complex othering happening around us.

The Team:
